Cisco and Rockwell Automation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand their partnership and launch the ‘Digital Skills for Industry’ program. This initiative aims to address the growing skills gap in India’s manufacturing sector by equipping the next generation of workers with critical digital skills. The program will combine IT and OT curriculums, covering areas like cybersecurity, networking, IoT, data science, AI, programming, and automation technologies. By improving digital literacy and attracting new talent, the program seeks to boost workforce productivity, accelerate career growth, and help close the global digital divide.
With a goal to export goods worth USD 1 trillion by 2030, India is positioned to become a key manufacturing hub. However, a shortage of skilled professionals remains a significant challenge. According to a Team Lease report, while the electronics manufacturing industry is projected to create 12 million jobs by FY 2027-28, a critical skills gap of 10 million trained workers persists. Addressing this gap is vital for ensuring India’s manufacturing sector remains globally competitive and ready for the future.
To tackle this issue, both Cisco and Rockwell Automation are investing heavily in operational technology and workforce upskilling. In July 2024, the companies signed an MOU to close the digital skills gap in manufacturing across the Asia-Pacific region through social impact initiatives, including Cisco’s Networking Academy (NetAcad). In India, NetAcad has already trained over 2.2 million students in collaboration with educational institutions and industry partners. NetAcad offers courses in emerging technologies such as networking, programming, and cybersecurity, equipping workers with the skills needed for future jobs.
Daisy Chittilapilly, President of Cisco India & SAARC, stated, “As industries face a digital-first future, the demand for skilled talent has never been greater. The transformation driven by AI and emerging technologies is especially critical for the manufacturing sector. We are thrilled to partner with Rockwell Automation to create a skilled, future-ready workforce that can leverage digital technologies to drive a smarter, more competitive manufacturing landscape.”
Rockwell Automation’s Managing Director for India, DilipSawhney, emphasized the urgency of upskilling and reskilling in light of rapid technological advances. “India’s manufacturing sector is at the heart of the country’s economic transformation. Our 9th annual State of Smart Manufacturing report highlights ‘change management’ as the biggest workforce challenge for 2024, underscoring the importance of human capital in adopting smart manufacturing technologies,” he said.
Recognizing the need for skilled workers in automation technologies, Rockwell Automation offers solutions to help businesses and academic institutions train workers in industry-relevant skills. These training programs are available through a combination of virtual and instructor-led courses, designed to address workforce challenges and prepare for the future of smart manufacturing.
“Investing in upskilling and reskilling programs is crucial for businesses to stay ahead in the automation era. These initiatives empower workers with the knowledge and skills needed to harness emerging technologies effectively. By fostering a dynamic talent ecosystem, we can help realize India’s vision of becoming a global manufacturing leader,” added Dilip Sawhney.
