Caitlyn India Private Limited (CIPL) has announced a ₹400 crore investment to establish a 50,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) integrated phosphoric acid manufacturing facility in India. The plant will be situated in a port-accessible industrial zone, with the company currently assessing locations in southern India. The project is expected to require between 30 and 50 acres of land.
The facility will employ hemihydrate–dihydrate (HH-DH) technology, which allows for the production of high-purity phosphoric acid alongside cleaner gypsum by-products. Additionally, the plant will feature a captive sulphuric acid unit to ensure cost-efficient and reliable operations. CIPL targets commissioning the plant by the financial year 2027.
Initially, the phosphoric acid produced will be supplied to Indian fertiliser manufacturers. In the future, a portion of the output will be used internally by CIPL once it establishes its own NPK fertiliser production facility.
“India’s phosphoric acid market is experiencing rapid growth, yet domestic production remains insufficient to meet demand,” stated Agnivesh Agarwal, Director of CIPL. “This investment underscores our commitment to supporting India’s fertiliser sector by providing high-quality, locally produced inputs, while developing a sustainable and globally competitive manufacturing operation.”
India’s demand for phosphoric acid is projected to rise from 4,948 KTPA in 2018 to 8,773 KTPA by 2030, driven by increasing fertiliser consumption and efforts to boost agricultural productivity. Despite this growth, India continues to rely significantly on imports. The market, valued at USD 2.62 billion in 2024, is expected to reach USD 4.91 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7 percent. CIPL plans to source rock phosphate, its primary raw material, from countries such as Morocco, Jordan, and Egypt, and is pursuing long-term supply agreements to ensure consistent availability and pricing.
This investment supports national initiatives aimed at enhancing fertiliser self-reliance and reducing import dependency. According to IBEF, the Indian fertiliser industry is projected to reach ₹1.38 lakh crore (USD 16.58 billion) by 2032. In FY24, fertiliser production in India achieved 45.2 million tonnes, bolstered by government policies promoting balanced nutrient use, modernisation, and innovations like nano-liquid fertilisers.
The project is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment during construction and operational phases, further strengthening India’s agri-input manufacturing sector. Founded in 2015 by Agnivesh Agarwal, Caitlyn India Private Limited is headquartered in Mumbai. The company is engaged in advanced fertiliser production and related agricultural inputs.
