CIL is further expanding its business diversification efforts into thermal and renewable power generation. Recently, CIL signed an MoU with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) to explore and execute power projects with a total capacity of 4,100 MW.

Coal India Limited (CIL) is a state-owned coal mining corporation in India. It is the largest coal-producing company in the world, contributing significantly to India’s energy needs. CIL operates through its subsidiaries in various regions of India, producing high-quality coal for diverse sectors such as power, steel, cement, and others.

Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) is a state-owned power generation company in Rajasthan, India. It operates thermal power plants across the state, contributing significantly to Rajasthan’s power generation capacity. RRVUNL is known for its commitment to providing reliable and affordable power to the people of Rajasthan.

These projects will include a mix of coal-fired thermal power plants, solar projects, pump storage plants, and wind projects. Rajasthan is actively seeking opportunities to secure power to meet its increasing energy demands. Therefore, all the electricity generated from these projects will be acquired by the state.

The signing event was attended by Bhajan Lal Sharma, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and virtually by Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Coal, Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs, as well as by R K Singh, Minister for Power, New, and Renewable Energy. The agreement outlines plans for five major projects. These include the establishment of a 2×800 MW coal-based pit-head power plant in a coal-rich state, with the power generated being utilized by Rajasthan.

Additionally, there are plans for a 2000 MW solar power project within RRVUNL’s solar park, a 200 MW (2×100) pump storage project at Jawahar Sagar, a 250 MW solar project on the land designated for the Banswara TPP by RRVUNL, and finally, a 50 MW wind project at the existing Ramgarh gas project in Jaisalmer.

According to the terms of the MoU, RRVUNL is responsible for ensuring the offtake guarantee from these projects and must also acquire, possess, and transfer the developed land parcels to the Joint Venture Company (JVC). CIL, on the other hand, is tasked with conducting feasibility studies and analyzing the financial viability of each proposed project.
