On August 25th, during the Artificial Intelligence Empowering Future Industries and Organizational Development Forum at the World Robot Conference 2024 (WRC 2024), China inaugurated its first artificial intelligence standardization research institute, named the Beijing Artificial Intelligence Standardization Research Institute, in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, also known as Beijing E-Town. The unveiling was attended by key officials including Gao Niandong, Deputy Director of the Beijing Standardization Committee and Director of the Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation, and other prominent figures from the AI and technology sectors.
Artificial intelligence is recognized as a pivotal technology driving the next wave of industrial and technological transformation. The establishment of this institute marks a significant step in advancing AI standardization in China, with the goal of supporting technological progress, enterprise development, and global competitiveness. The E-Town has been proactive in promoting this initiative, aiming to create a standardized industry ecosystem, support intelligent transformation for enterprises, and contribute to global AI advancements with solutions rooted in Beijing’s expertise.
The Artificial Intelligence Standardization Research Institute will focus on comprehensive standardization research across the AI technology chain. This includes exploring advanced AI technologies, industry applications, and addressing potential risks in AI governance, such as ethical concerns and safety. The institute will work on key technologies like computing power, algorithms, and data, ensuring that AI development remains safe, reliable, and controllable.
In addition, the institute will drive the standardization of AI products and industry applications, particularly in robotics, by leveraging the Beijing Embodied Intelligence Robot Innovation Center. It will establish a collaborative and innovative technology system, producing pioneering products and addressing common industry challenges. The institute also plans to expand its influence in vertical industries like robotics and autonomous driving by using key scenarios to develop industry standards.
In support of industrial development, the institute will offer services to enhance enterprise growth, including an AI interoperability standard and evaluation platform. This platform will provide comprehensive services such as data resources, algorithm models, and industry solutions, helping companies participate in AI standard development at various levels. The institute is also developing criteria for selecting benchmark demonstration projects to guide enterprises in AI exploration and innovation.
Beijing E-Town is working towards building a citywide AI hub, integrating AI technology with industrial upgrades. The area has already established a high-performance computing cluster, creating one of the largest AI public computing platforms in China, with 5000P of computing power in use and plans to exceed 10,000P. Additionally, Beijing AI Data Training Base is being developed, focusing on areas like healthcare, smart transportation, and finance, with over 50 companies already involved.
Looking ahead, Beijing E-Town aims to leverage opportunities from national AI initiatives to support the Beijing Artificial Intelligence Standardization Research Institute in setting standards and advancing the AI industry. The region is focused on driving AI development through high-quality standards, cluster-based growth, and innovative applications.
