Ford Motor Company may have ceased manufacturing in India in August 2022, but its presence in Chennai continues to shape the future of its global vehicle lineup. Through Ford Business Solutions (FBS), the city has become a key player in the design and development of critical components for Ford’s top-selling models worldwide, including the F-Series, Explorer, Transit, and Ranger.
FBS, operating from it’s Global Technology & Business Center in Chennai with a workforce of 12,000, plays a vital role in computer-aided design, engineering, and software development for it’s global operations. The team contributes to the design and development of components for electric vehicles, internal combustion engines, and hybrid vehicles.
Notably, the F-Series, one of it’s most profitable models, continues to lead the U.S. market as the top-selling passenger vehicle and pickup truck for the 48th consecutive year. The FBS team’s involvement in these vehicles underscores Chennai’s significance in it’s global strategy.
FBS is also in the process of expanding its Chennai workforce by 3,000 over the next three years, further cementing its role in it’s global operations. The team collaborates closely with engineering centers worldwide to design specific components and systems, contributing to the success of Ford’s vehicles across markets.
Products developed with FBS’s input have earned recognition, such as the 2024 Ford F-Series Super Duty, which was named the most appealing large heavy-duty pickup in JD Power’s 2024 US Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.
Despite the closure of Ford’s manufacturing unit in Maraimalai Nagar, Chennai remains a crucial hub for the company’s global innovation, supporting functions from technology and analytics to finance and human resources across multiple locations, including Mexico City and Hungary.
