ABB has secured a major contract from Poland-based Remontowa Shipbuilding to supply advanced power distribution and propulsion systems, including its Compact Onboard DC Grid™, for seven fully electric double-ended ferries. These vessels will be delivered to Scottish operator Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. (CMAL) between late 2027 and early 2029. In addition, ABB will provide shore power infrastructure across CMAL’s ferry terminals, starting with Kennacraig and Port Askaig, enabling cleaner and quieter operations while docked.

The all-electric ferries, part of CMAL’s Small Vessel Replacement Programme, mark a significant leap toward fleet modernization and sustainable transport in the Clyde and Hebrides region. Each 50-meter vessel will carry up to 200 passengers and 24 cars—except one designed for 250 passengers and 16 cars—serving nine routes along Scotland’s west coast. This initiative, co-funded by the Scottish Government, aligns with the UK’s broader vision of decarbonizing its maritime and port infrastructure.

ABB’s Compact Onboard DC Grid™ has been engineered for vessels with limited space, ensuring efficient and flexible power management. The system integrates marine-grade DC switchboards, wall-mounted inverters, and ABB’s AXME Marine Motors, offering high power density, reliability, and reduced installation complexity. Together, these technologies will optimize onboard energy usage and ensure safe, emission-free operations. Complementing this, ABB’s shore connection systems will enable vessels to shut down engines while berthed, cutting CO₂ emissions and noise pollution and improving air quality in port areas.

Jim Anderson, Director of Vessels at CMAL, highlighted that these electric ferries will “enhance connectivity and bring cleaner transport options to island communities,” while ABB’s Marine & Ports division president, JuhaKoskela, noted that the collaboration “demonstrates ABB’s ability to electrify small and mid-sized vessels efficiently, contributing to global maritime decarbonization.” With this project, ABB strengthens its leadership in sustainable marine technologies, driving forward the transition toward greener port and ferry operations worldwide.
