Calderys, a global leader in high-temperature solutions, continues its dedication to sustainability with the development of its flagship greenfield project in Odisha, India. The CAPES facility, located in East & South India, marks a significant step forward in eco-friendly industrial practices for the refractories and steel casting fluxes sector. As a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub, the plant is designed to meet growing demand while embracing sustainability at its core.

Sustainability at CAPES is not just about meeting regulations—it’s about exceeding expectations. The plant has put in place a robust strategy to minimize its environmental impact across key areas such as energy use, water consumption, and emissions. Notably, the facility aims to source 20% of its energy from solar power within the next five years, reinforcing Calderys’ commitment to renewable energy integration.

A key feature of the plant’s design is its focus on zero effluent discharge. Through advanced water recycling systems, including effluent treatment and sewage treatment installations, no wastewater is released beyond the factory grounds. Treated water is reused for landscaping and other operational needs. Additionally, Calderys plans to install 95 groundwater recharge pits to enhance local aquifer sustainability.

The facility is also investing in a green belt initiative, with plans to plant 2,000 trees, 800 of which have already been put in place. This initiative aims to cover 33% of the premises with greenery, promoting biodiversity and supporting carbon offset efforts to improve the surrounding microclimate.

Air quality is another priority at CAPES. Equipped with cutting-edge dust and emission control technologies, the plant ensures the air remains five times cleaner than typical refractory facilities. High-efficiency filtration systems help significantly reduce particulate emissions, contributing to a healthier environment.

Lastly, the CAPES project has adopted a circular economy approach by incorporating recycled materials and scrap into its manufacturing processes. This reduces waste and boosts resource efficiency, aligning with Calderys’ broader goal of sustainable production.

Ish Mohan Garg, Senior Vice President of the Asia Pacific region, expressed: “At Calderys, sustainability is deeply integrated into every facet of our operations. The CAPES plant is a clear example of our commitment to future-focused manufacturing, where innovation and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand. Our efforts are a pledge to the planet, the communities we serve, and future generations, while also supporting India’s national decarbonization objectives.”

With these groundbreaking initiatives, the CAPES facility is setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious industrial growth, aligning with both national sustainability goals and the global movement toward a more sustainable future. Calderys has achieved a significant milestone in its global growth strategy with the launch of its CAPES project in Odisha, India. Poised to become the world’s largest single-site greenfield facility for refractories and steel casting fluxes, the site spans 40 acres and will feature five state-of-the-art production lines along with advanced testing units. This strategic investment will substantially enhance Calderys’ ability to meet the rising industrial demand across India, particularly in the eastern and southern regions.

Although full-scale production is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026, operations are already underway with one manufacturing line currently in use. For more updates on the CAPES project, visit the Calderys website.
