The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has today given its approval to the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy for Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing’ proposed by the Department of Biotechnology.

This policy introduces a comprehensive framework aimed at driving innovation and supporting research and development, as well as entrepreneurship across various thematic sectors. The key features of the BioE3 policy include a robust commitment to advancing technology through the establishment of Biomanufacturing & Bio-AI hubs and Biofoundries.

This initiative is designed to expedite the development and commercialization of biotechnology, facilitating the creation of advanced biomanufacturing processes. Additionally, the policy places a strong emphasis on regenerative bioeconomy models that contribute to green growth, thereby supporting the expansion of India’s skilled workforce and driving significant job creation.

The BioE3 Policy aligns with the government’s broader objectives, including the ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy and the ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ initiatives. It aims to further these goals by advancing a ‘Circular Bioeconomy,’ which is crucial for fostering accelerated ‘Green Growth.’

This policy is poised to pave the way for a more sustainable, innovative, and globally responsive future, laying the foundation for the Bio-vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). In today’s context, it is imperative to invest in the industrialization of biological sciences to promote sustainable and circular practices.

This investment is essential to address critical societal issues such as climate change mitigation, food security, and human health. A resilient biomanufacturing ecosystem is vital for accelerating cutting-edge innovations that can lead to the development of bio-based products.

High performance biomanufacturing refers to the ability to produce a wide range of products, from medicines to materials, and to tackle challenges related to agriculture and food security. It promotes the production of bio-based goods through the integration of advanced biotechnological processes.

To meet national priorities, the BioE3 Policy will focus on several strategic and thematic sectors. These include high-value bio-based chemicals, biopolymers, and enzymes; smart proteins and functional foods; precision biotherapeutics; climate-resilient agriculture; carbon capture and utilization; as well as marine and space research.

Overall, the BioE3 Policy by the cabinet is designed to foster a future that is not only sustainable but also innovative and adaptable to global challenges, enhancing India’s position as a leader in biotechnology and biomanufacturing.
