BYD has recently filed design patents in India for two new vehicles. In September, the Bao 3 electric SUV was registered, followed by the Denza N9 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in October. These filings come ahead of the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025, where BYD has confirmed its participation. However, the company has yet to officially announce whether these models will be showcased at the event.
Denza, a luxury new energy vehicle (NEV) brand owned by BYD and based in Shenzhen, China, is behind the N9. With a wheelbase of 3.1 meters and a total length of 5.2 meters, the N9 enters the same size category as the Mercedes GLS. According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the N9 PHEV features a powertrain combining a 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine producing 206hp and an electric setup generating a combined output of 924hp. This includes a motor on the front axle and two motors on the rear wheels, powered by a 47kWh blade-cell battery offering an electric range of 165 kilometers. An all-electric version of the N9, equipped with the same three-motor configuration, delivers up to 965hp.
The Bao 3 electric SUV is a product of BYD’s Fangchengbao off-road-focused division. Built on the Super 3 concept, this 4.6-meter-long SUV sits above the Atto 3 in the lineup. Its dual-motor configuration, with a 149hp motor at the front and a 299hp motor at the rear, enables a four-wheel drive (4WD) experience. The Bao 3 accelerates from 0 to 100kph in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201kph. Additionally, BYD has patented a design variant of the Bao 3 featuring a roof-mounted carrier.
BYD’s participation in the Bharat Mobility Global Expo will highlight its existing electric vehicle portfolio along with other new energy vehicles. It remains to be seen whether the Denza N9 and Bao 3 will make an appearance at the event.
