ABB has renewed its partnership with bp through a five-year Global Frame Agreement (GFA) to supply automation, electrical, and telecommunications equipment across bp’s upstream and downstream assets and facilities. The aim is to streamline system integration, reducing risks, costs, and project execution time.

Under the scope of the agreement, ABB will deliver an Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS) using the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® Distributed Control System across bp’s operations. This system will be central to bp’s adoption of new technologies while maintaining and enhancing existing operations, moving towards a more open, modular, and resilient automation environment that optimizes performance.

Richard Mortimer, Vice President Engineering and Quality at bp, said, “ABB was selected for this strategic agreement due to their global presence, high-quality brand, and proven expertise in managing complex systems. This collaboration will help us maintain project timelines and ensure timely delivery and execution.”

ABB will also provide an Electrical Distribution System (EDS) for safe, reliable, and efficient operation of bp’s assets, including power management systems, switchgear, and motors. Their Digital Telecommunications Systems will improve bp’s digital infrastructure, lowering total cost of ownership by offering long-term maintenance and health monitoring for electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.

Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB Energy Industries, stated, “We are proud to partner with bp to support their efforts in optimizing, electrifying, and decarbonizing their global operations. Our focus on flexibility, security, and digital transformation will enable bp to seamlessly integrate their current operations with future capabilities, ensuring continuous progress.”

It will employ the Adaptive Execution™ project management approach, which integrates automation, electrical, and telecommunications systems throughout the project lifecycle from design to delivery. This method aims to mitigate project risks and costs, shortening timelines by 10-30 percent and reducing capital expenditure by up to 40 percent.

ABB is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a sustainable and resource-efficient future.
