BorgWarner has been awarded a contract by a leading global automotive manufacturer to supply its 400-volt High-Voltage Coolant Heater (HVCH) for integration into a range of the automaker’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) platforms. The contract encompasses multiple vehicle segments, including mid-size pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and minivans. Production under the agreement is scheduled to commence in 2027. This award represents BorgWarner’s largest HVCH PHEV contract in North America to date, based on anticipated production volumes.
The 400V HVCH system is engineered to offer a compact and adaptable design, enabling compatibility across varied vehicle configurations without requiring modifications to existing platforms. The technology utilizes brazed aluminum fin construction and thick-film heating elements to achieve a high thermal power density of up to 10 kW. This design enhances heat transfer efficiency, improves coolant flow distribution, and helps prevent bubble formation and gas entrapment.
The HVCH unit is designed to deliver reliable thermal energy to both the vehicle cabin and battery system, regardless of ambient temperature. By maintaining consistent thermal conditions, the system supports faster battery charging, extended battery life, improved durability, and enhanced overall vehicle performance and driving range.
