BorgWarner is expanding its work with Great Wall Motor in the field of electrified propulsion, adding two new dual-inverter programs to its existing collaborations. These latest projects are slated to enter mass production in 2026, marking another step forward in the companies’ growing technology alliance.
Dr Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager of PowerDrive Systems, noted that Great Wall Motor’s renewed trust reflects both the strength of BorgWarner’s engineering capabilities and its ongoing commitment to supporting the automaker’s new-energy roadmap.
At the core of this cooperation is BorgWarner’s dual inverter, engineered with a highly integrated architecture that allows two motors to be managed through a single controller. This design improves packaging freedom, simplifies installation, and cuts weight and cost through the company’s specialized power-module configuration.
The latest generation features a double-sided-cooled power module using Viper technology, reducing thermal resistance by up to 50% compared to single-sided systems and significantly boosting power density. The module can also house different semiconductor die types in identical-sized packages, helping meet China’s increasingly stringent CLTC efficiency requirements. An adaptive battery-voltage function further expands the motor’s constant-power and high-efficiency zones.
The dual inverter is built on a flexible platform that can be adapted for a variety of hybrid propulsion needs. In the two newly awarded programs, the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) version incorporates a DC/DC converter with an optional voltage-boost unit, while the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant operates without either component. This modular approach enables faster product updates and lowers development expenses, offering automakers a versatile foundation for the next generation of electrified vehicles.
BorgWarner has a strong commitment to sustainability, developing technologies that improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance vehicle performance. The company serves a diverse customer base, including automakers, suppliers, and consumers worldwide, with a growing emphasis on electric mobility and hybrid systems. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, BorgWarner operates in multiple countries and continues to lead the way in advancing automotive technologies.
