BMW announced plans on Thursday to introduce its first hydrogen-powered vehicle to the market in 2028. The car will use fuel cell technology developed in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corp., though specific details about the model, pricing, and production volume have not yet been revealed.

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse stated that the new vehicle would showcase “how technological progress is shaping the mobility of the future.” The partnership with Toyota is expected to help both companies reduce costs while developing a fuel cell system that could be applied to both passenger and commercial vehicles.

As the leading advocate for hydrogen technology among German automakers, BMW has been testing its iX5 Hydrogen model, which boasts a range of 500 kilometers (310 miles) and a refueling time of just three to four minutes. The company is also developing prototypes for both hydrogen fuel cell and battery-powered vehicles as part of its strategy to stay competitive, regardless of which green technology gains dominance.

Hydrogen-powered cars, like electric vehicles, use electric motors but rely on a fuel cell to convert hydrogen into electricity. While these vehicles offer quick refueling times and extended range, the high cost and limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure have deterred many carmakers from investing in the technology.

The company expects that by 2028, the hydrogen refueling infrastructure will have expanded significantly, supporting the company’s plans for a hydrogen-powered future.
