BMW has recently obtained design patents in India for two upcoming models—the refreshed 1 Series hatchback and the Skytop roadster. While the updated 2 Series Gran Coupe is set for a launch in India this year, these two models are making their debut in the Indian market. The fourth-generation 1 Series, revealed in June 2024, is largely based on the third-generation model from 2019, with its core design elements remaining unchanged. However, the hatchback now features a completely redesigned front end.
The previous tooth-shaped kidney grille has been replaced by a sleeker unit similar to the one found on the newly updated 3 Series. The headlamps are also narrower, giving the 1 Series a more dynamic and angular appearance from the front. The rear end gets updated tail-lights and a new bumper, and the M Sport variant boasts a more aggressive design compared to the standard version.
Inside, the 1 Series is equipped with BMW’s 20-inch Curved Display, which integrates both a 10.7-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.3-inch infotainment screen. The traditional circular iDrive controller has been replaced, and the number of physical buttons has been significantly reduced. Even the air conditioning controls have been moved to the infotainment system.
In global markets, the 1 Series is offered with a range of 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines. The petrol lineup includes the 170hp 120 and the 300hp M135 xDrive versions, while the diesel variants feature the 150hp 118d and 163hp 120d.
BMW previously sold the second-generation 1 Series in India but discontinued it in 2017 due to sluggish sales. If the new 1 Series is introduced in India, it will mark the return of the hatchback after an 8-year hiatus.
In addition, BMW has previewed the Skytop roadster, set for limited production with just 50 units. The roadster will retain the Z8-inspired design from the concept version, featuring a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The production model, though not yet revealed, will maintain the distinctive kidney grille with illuminated elements and horizontal slats.
The concept design includes ultra-thin LED headlights, large vents on the bonnet, and a unique central divider on the boot that leads to a small ducktail spoiler. Inside, the roadster is outfitted in brown leather and features the latest BMW iDrive system, a digital driver’s display, and a conventional multifunction steering wheel.
