BMW Industries Ltd is establishing a 0.5 million tonne cold rolling complex in Jharkhand with an investment of ₹803 crore, aimed at expanding its portfolio of high-end steel products. The project is part of the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Speciality Steel, launched by the Ministry of Steel in 2021 with a budget of ₹6,322 crore to encourage value-added steel production and technological advancement in the sector.
The new facility in Bokaro will manufacture colour-coated steel and advanced alloy/non-alloy coated products used across infrastructure, construction, automotive, renewable energy, and defence industries. Production of colour-coated products is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of FY26, with revenues expected from the following quarter. Manufacturing of advanced non-alloy coated products is targeted for the first quarter of FY27.
Managing Director Harsh Bansal stated that the ₹803 crore investment, including ₹500 crore in debt and the remainder from internal accruals, will increase the company’s total capacity to 2.5 million tonnes. The expansion, being developed as a brownfield project, is expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment while supporting regional socio-economic growth.
BMW Industries currently produces TMT rebars, pipes, tubes, and galvanised products. On the recent imposition of a 12% safeguard duty on certain flat steel imports, Bansal noted that the move will curb the dumping of around 0.7 million tonnes of products into the Indian market, protecting domestic manufacturers operating at roughly 70% capacity. He added that the company’s expansion is closely aligned with the Make in India initiative, with a focus on supplying premium steel products manufactured locally.
