Birla Opus, the paint brand under Grasim Industries, a key company of the Aditya Birla Group, has solidified its position as the second largest player in India’s decorative paints sector based on installed capacity. The brand’s total capacity now stands at 1,096 million liters per annum (MLPA).

Following the launch of the Mahad plant, Birla Opus’ capacity increased to 1,096 MLPA, out of a planned total capacity of 1,332 MLPA, as detailed in the company’s post-results Investor Presentation. Asian Paints remains the leader in the sector, with a capacity exceeding 1,850 MLPA.

Additionally, Birla Opus is set to begin trial production at its new Kharagpur plant in the first quarter of this fiscal year, with full commercial production expected to begin in the first half of FY’26. Birla Opus now holds over 21% of the total industry capacity share in the decorative paints market.

The Aditya Birla Group has established five plants across India—at Panipat, Ludhiana, Cheyyar (near Chennai), Chamarajnagar, and Mysore. The total investment in these plants has reached Rs 9,352 crore as of March 31, 2025, accounting for 94% of the planned project cost.

In August 2021, Grasim announced its entry into the paints industry with an initial investment of Rs 5,000 crore, later doubling this figure to Rs 10,000 crore in May 2022. The company embarked on a major expansion with six plants built simultaneously, all completed on schedule and without cost overruns.

Competing with established names such as Asian Paints, Berger, Kansai Nerolac, and AkzoNobel India, Birla Opus holds over a 10% share of the Indian decorative paints market. The company reported significant quarter-on-quarter revenue growth, reaching a high single-digit market share in Q4FY25.

The Indian paints industry, valued at approximately Rs 72,000 crore, is expected to grow at a rate of 10% annually over the next decade, driven by increasing demand for housing, urbanization, and premium products. However, India’s per capita paint consumption remains low, at 3.5 kg per person annually, well below the global average of 10 kg per person per year.

Birla Opus Paints, a venture from the prestigious Aditya Birla Group, has made a remarkable entry into the paint industry, blending innovation with sustainability. The brand focuses on delivering high-quality decorative and protective coatings that cater to modern design trends while addressing environmental concerns.

With a commitment to durability, aesthetic appeal, and eco-friendly formulations, Birla Opus Paints offers a diverse range of solutions for interior and exterior applications. Leveraging advanced technology and the group’s legacy of excellence, the brand aims to set new standards in customer satisfaction and market leadership, making it a trusted choice for homes and businesses alike.
