Birla Carbon, a leading provider of carbon black solutions, has been awarded the prestigious ISCC PLUS certification for its manufacturing plant in Italy, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and circularity in producing sustainable materials like Continua 8000 SCM.The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a voluntary program that promotes sustainability and circular economy practices across various industries.
The ISCC PLUS certification from Birla Carbon’s Italian plant aligns with the company’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This recognition also coincides with the successful introduction of Birla Carbon’s ContinuaTM Sustainable Carbonaceous Material (SCM), enabling the production of circular materials like ContinuaTM 8000 SCM. The certification validates biomass, waste, residues, non-biological renewables, and recycled carbon materials under its framework.
Expressing his thoughts on this significant achievement, Dr. Santrupt Misra, Group Director of Birla Carbon and Director of Chemicals & Group H.R. at Aditya Birla Group, stated, “As customer interest and demand for sustainable products continue to grow, Birla Carbon’s first ISCC PLUS certification presents us with an opportunity to better support our customers, especially through our ContinuaTM product line.” Dr. Misra emphasized the Aditya Birla Group’s dedication to sustainability and circularity and how Birla Carbon’s advanced products contribute to fulfilling their commitment to a net zero carbon emissions world.

Commenting on the certification, John Loudermilk, Chief Executive Officer of Birla Carbon, highlighted the company’s commitment to environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable production. John Loudermilk stated, “We are pleased to have achieved ISCC PLUS certification for our Italian plant, which reinforces our commitment to sustainability, starting with our ContinuaTM Sustainable Carbonaceous Material.”
He added, “Our goal is to extend this vital certification to all our manufacturing locations soon.” He also emphasized that Birla Carbon’s sustainability efforts were previously recognized with a “Platinum” rating by EcoVadis for their sustainable business practices. With the addition of the ISCC PLUS certification, Birla Carbon is well-positioned to supply globally recognized sustainable materials to its customers.
From a stakeholder perspective, ISCC PLUS is a reliable system that identifies companies providing sustainable and circular raw materials. Birla Carbon’s adherence to this certification further solidifies its commitment to sustainability and positions the company as a leader in the industry.
