Birla Carbon intends to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050

Birla Carbon, a global manufacturer of carbon black and a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group, has proclaimed its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Birla Carbon, one of the world’s biggest makers of carbon black, has declared plans to reduce its net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. The move is seen as a natural progression in Birla Carbon’s sustainability and circularity leadership. Birla Carbon recently launched its Continua brand, which makes Sustainable Carbonaceous Materials (SCM) available.

Birla Carbon’s statement of net-zero emissions is consistent with The Paris Agreement, which was signed as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation, and Finance. It also corresponds with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Tire Industry Project SDG Roadmap, which aims to address the health and environmental implications associated with tyre life cycle impacts in order to achieve a more sustainable future. Birla Carbon is cooperating with sibling firms within the Aditya Birla Group to create decarbonization projects through the Aditya Birla Science and Technology Center.

This net-zero objective is not only aspirational but also realistic, thanks to almost 160 years of exceptional innovation in the carbon black business and decades of concentration on attaining sustainability. Birla Carbon is developing new and sophisticated technologies that will be used to achieve its goal by forming a league of alliances with leading sustainability solution providers. Birla Carbon will also make mention of the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi). Birla Carbon will commit to evaluating and releasing interim targets that are in line with the SBTi over the next 12 months.

Dr. Santrupt B. Misra, Group Director, Carbon Black; Director, Chemicals; and Director, Group HR, Aditya Birla Group, commented on the announcement, saying, “Climate change is the biggest challenge we face today as a human race, and the burden of it will be carried by our future generations, unless we choose differently.” Birla Carbon has opted to join the rest of the industries that have chosen to rise to the challenge by announcing its goal of becoming Net-Zero by 2050.” “Sustainability has always been a significant driver and a symbol of our success,” he continued. For our customers, we will prioritise Sustainable Operational Excellence (SOE) and sustainable materials. To make our vision a reality in the next years, we will focus on Sustainable Operational Excellence (SOE), along with sustainable materials for our customers, and many more solutions. Birla Carbon’s Purpose is to ‘Share the Strength,’ and we hope that our peers and the industry at large recognise and work with us. I wish the entire leadership team the best of luck as they embark on this path.”

“All businesses have a responsibility to drive improvements for the global environment; however, we can truly build a greener and brighter future only by working hand-in-hand with our customers, suppliers, and partners throughout the supply chain,” said John Loudermilk, Chief Executive Officer of Birla Carbon, at the announcement. Our goal is to constantly develop and evolve our capabilities in order to have a positive influence through our objective, ‘Share the Strength,' to have a positive impact on the ecosystem and society at large.”

Joe Gaynor

Birla Carbon's Chief Sustainability Officer, Joe Gaynor, commented on the development, saying, "As a responsible industry leader, Birla Carbon is completely dedicated to helping alleviate the effects of climate change." For us, the question was never if, but when. We have already established the groundwork for this commitment, some of which may be seen in our recent sustainability and circularity efforts.” “The launch of ContinuaTM 8000, a Sustainable Carbonaceous Material, opened our doors to the potential of a net zero world,” he continues. We are convinced that we will achieve this aim in collaboration with our customers.”

Birla Carbon will focus on all three scopes of carbon emissions assessment, reduction, and offsetting. Based on its direct and indirect emission reduction activities, Scope 1 and 2 are estimated to account for the majority of its carbon footprint reduction. A smaller amount of its decrease will come from scope 3, which is based on the operations of the value chain’s upstream and downstream industries.

The company plans to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 by focusing on four overarching segments: research to discover new ways to capture and convert carbons; reduce reliance on traditional manufacturing processes; replace with alternative energy and feedstock, and repurpose carbon solutions for sustainability through circularity.
