Biocon Limited (BSE: 532523, NSE: BIOCON) has received approval from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for its new drug product fill-finish unit for Semglee® (insulin glargine) at the company’s insulin manufacturing facility in Malaysia. The MHRA approval covers the new fill-finish line established at Biocon’s Malaysia facility for the manufacture of Semglee, an insulin glargine product. The approval adds to the regulatory clearances received by Biocon for the facility and supports the company’s manufacturing capabilities for insulin products for international markets.

The approval follows regulatory clearance from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which Biocon received in July for the new drug product fill-finish line. The new unit forms part of Biocon’s insulin manufacturing operations in Malaysia. The facility supports the company’s integrated insulin manufacturing capabilities and enables drug product fill-finish activities within the site.

Semglee is a biosimilar insulin glargine product developed for the treatment of diabetes. Biocon has developed manufacturing capabilities across the insulin value chain and supplies insulin products to markets in several countries. The MHRA approval is subject to the applicable regulatory requirements governing the manufacture and supply of pharmaceutical products in the UK. The clearance enables Biocon to progress the use of the new fill-finish facility for the relevant product, in line with regulatory requirements.

The Malaysian facility is part of Biocon’s global manufacturing network for biologics and other pharmaceutical products. The company has invested in manufacturing and development capabilities across India and overseas markets to support the supply of medicines and biologics.

Biocon has a portfolio spanning generic active pharmaceutical ingredients, generic formulations, biosimilars and novel biologics. The company’s operations cover research and development, manufacturing and commercialisation, with products supplied across multiple international markets.

The latest approval follows Biocon’s ongoing regulatory engagements in major pharmaceutical markets. Regulatory approvals for manufacturing facilities and drug products are required before products can be supplied in individual markets and are based on assessments of manufacturing processes, quality systems and compliance with applicable standards.

Biocon Limited is a global biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Bengaluru, India. Its businesses include Biocon Biologics, Biocon Generics and research and development activities. The company focuses on developing and manufacturing medicines across areas including diabetes, oncology, immunology and other chronic diseases.

The company has manufacturing and research facilities in India and other countries and supplies pharmaceutical products to markets in the United States, Europe and other regions. The MHRA approval for the Malaysia fill-finish unit adds another regulatory clearance for Biocon’s insulin manufacturing operations and supports the company’s plans to expand its manufacturing capacity for insulin products in international markets.
