Biocon Biologics Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Biocon Ltd, has received marketing approval from Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) for its pegfilgrastim biosimilar. The product is a biosimilar to Neulasta® and has been developed and manufactured by Biocon Biologics. Global Regulatory Partners Japan will serve as the Marketing Authorization Holder on behalf of Biocon, while Sandoz K.K. will have exclusive responsibility for promoting, selling and distributing the product in Japan.

The approval strengthens Biocon Biologics’ presence in Japan’s growing biosimilars market and expands its portfolio of products available to patients in the country. Pegfilgrastim is a long-acting medicine used to reduce the duration of neutropenia, a condition in which patients have low levels of neutrophils, particularly following certain cancer treatments. Biosimilars are highly similar biological medicines that can provide additional treatment options and support broader access to important therapies.

The Japanese approval marks another step in Biocon Biologics’ strategy to expand access to high-quality and affordable biologic medicines across international markets. The company has developed a broad biosimilars portfolio covering multiple therapeutic areas and continues to build its presence in regulated markets. Its operations span research and development, manufacturing and commercialisation of biosimilar products.

Japan is an important market for biosimilar medicines, with the country continuing to encourage greater use of high-quality biological alternatives as part of efforts to improve access and manage healthcare costs. Through its partnership with Sandoz KK, Biocon will leverage an established commercial platform in Japan for the launch and distribution of the pegfilgrastim biosimilar.

The product will be marketed in Japan following the regulatory approval and in accordance with applicable local requirements. Biocon Biologics has been expanding its global portfolio through regulatory approvals and commercial partnerships in several markets. The company’s focus remains on increasing patient access to biological medicines while maintaining standards for quality, safety and efficacy.

The latest approval adds to Biocon Biologics’ presence in Japan and supports its broader objective of making affordable biosimilar treatments accessible to more patients worldwide. Biocon Biologics Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Biocon Ltd. and focuses on the development, manufacturing and commercialisation of biosimilar medicines. The company works across multiple therapeutic areas and serves patients through a growing international network.

The company combines biotechnology capabilities, manufacturing infrastructure and global partnerships to develop and supply biosimilar products for regulated and emerging markets. The pegfilgrastim approval in Japan further expands this international footprint and provides another opportunity for Biocon Biologics to contribute to the availability of affordable biologic therapies.
