BHP, a leading global resources company, and the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest state-owned steel producer, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore methods of reducing carbon emissions in steelmaking. This collaboration focuses on developing lower-carbon technologies for the blast furnace process, a key step toward decarbonising steel production in India.

The agreement outlines multiple initiatives aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions at SAIL’s integrated steel plants, which rely on blast furnace technology. The partners will explore the use of alternative reductants such as hydrogen and biochar, while also fostering local research and development to support this transition. The implementation of these technologies is essential to reducing carbon emissions in both India’s steel sector and the global steel industry.

SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “SAIL is eager to collaborate with BHP to find sustainable solutions for steel production. Aligning the steel industry with climate goals is imperative, and SAIL is committed to driving innovation in this area.”

BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, Rag Udd, added, “We are excited to strengthen our partnership with SAIL to explore decarbonisation opportunities in the blast furnace route. Tackling this challenge requires collective efforts and expertise to develop technologies that can make a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions, both now and in the future.”

Steel Authority of India Limited is one of India’s largest state-owned steel producers and a key player in the nation’s industrial landscape. Established in 1954, it operates several integrated steel plants across India, producing a wide range of steel products for various sectors, including construction, automotive, engineering, and infrastructure.

As a public sector enterprise, SAIL plays a vital role in India’s economic development, consistently contributing to the country’s self-reliance in steel production. The company is also focused on modernizing its facilities and expanding production capacity while actively working toward sustainability goals, including reducing carbon emissions through cleaner technologies. SAIL’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability underpins its position as a leader in the global steel industry.
