Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), in partnership with Hitachi Energy India, has been awarded a significant contract by Power Grid Corporation of India for the Khavda-Nagpur High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission project. This milestone project aims to bolster India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The contract involves designing and constructing 800kV, 6,000 MW HVDC terminal stations across a 1,200 km stretch. The system will facilitate the evacuation of renewable energy from the Khavda Renewable Energy Zone in Gujarat to Nagpur, Maharashtra. Scheduled for completion by 2029, this project plays a pivotal role in India’s plan to integrate 500 GW of renewable energy into its power grid.

The tender, floated under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process, marks the first HVDC project awarded through this method. Power Grid Corporation, acting through its Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), selected BHEL and Hitachi Energy for the implementation of bi-directional HVDC bipoles and associated AC substations.

Part of Phase V: Part A of the Khavda Renewable Energy Zone, this initiative will support the interstate transmission system (ISTS), enabling the evacuation of up to 8 GW of renewable energy. It forms a crucial component of India’s ambitious efforts to expand and enhance its renewable energy transmission capabilities.
