Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications giant, announced a groundbreaking collaboration on Wednesday with IDEMIA Secure Transactions, a pioneering technology solutions provider to switch to recycled PVC SIM cards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Bharti Airtel, headquartered in New Delhi, India, is one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies. Established in 1995 by Sunil Bharti Mittal, the company operates in 18 countries across Asia and Africa. With a customer base of over 471 million, Bharti Airtel offers a wide range of services, including mobile, broadband, and digital TV.
The company is known for its innovative solutions and commitment to providing reliable connectivity to millions of people. Bharti Airtel continues to expand its network and invest in cutting-edge technologies to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
This innovative partnership marks a significant stride towards environmental sustainability as Airtel transitions from conventional virgin plastic SIM cards to utilizing recycled PVC SIM cards, a remarkable initiative not yet undertaken by any other telecom company.
By embracing this transition, Airtel aims to curtail the production of over 165 tonnes of virgin plastic, thereby mitigating the generation of approximately 690 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions within a single year. Pankaj Miglani, the Director of Supply Chain at Bharti Airtel, emphasized the brand’s steadfast commitment to adopting diverse sustainable practices, aligning seamlessly with India’s overarching goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
Furthermore, Airtel has pledged to substantially reduce its absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an impressive 50.2 percent by the fiscal year 2031, underscoring its unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility.
