BEML Limited, a prominent player in the rail and defense sectors, announced on Friday that it has secured an additional order worth over Rs 405 crore from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited. This order entails the supply of seven additional metro trains (42 cars) for the second phase of the Bangalore Metro Project, bringing the total number of train sets under the contract from 53 to 60.
According to BEML, these state-of-the-art driverless metro trains have been designed and developed by their in-house engineering teams based in Bengaluru. The six-car train sets are constructed using high-strength Austenitic stainless steel for enhanced durability, safety, and passenger comfort.
Each metro car is equipped with two roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners, ensuring an optimal travel environment. The new trains also include advanced technological features like an IP-based Passenger Announcement (PA) system, a Passenger Information System (PIS), and a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS), which offers real-time station updates and boosts security. Additionally, the metro cars are fitted with LCD-based Dynamic Route Map displays and electrically operated automatic doors that synchronize with Platform Screen Doors to further enhance passenger convenience and safety.
Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Limited, expressed pride in strengthening the company’s long-standing partnership with BMRCL. He highlighted that this additional order supports Bangalore’s growing urban mobility needs and aligns with India’s AatmaNirbhar Bharat vision.
This order is an extension of the 5RS-DM contract initially awarded to BEML in August 2023, valued at approximately Rs 3,177 crore. This contract includes the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of metro train sets, as well as comprehensive maintenance for up to 15 years. The project is a significant part of Bangalore Metro Rail’s expansion plans under phases 2, 2A, and 2B, reinforcing BEML’s leadership in India’s metro manufacturing industry.
