BEML Limited has introduced the BRS21, India’s most powerful electric rope shovel designed and manufactured domestically. The equipment was formally delivered at Nigahi Mines in Singrauli, with senior leadership from BEML, Coal India Limited (CIL), and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) in attendance.
The BRS21 is an electric rope shovel developed entirely within India. It represents a shift toward cleaner, large-scale surface mining practices by offering an alternative to diesel-powered machinery. The shovel weighs 720 tonnes and comes with a 21 cubic meter bottom dump bucket, making it one of the largest and most capable machines of its kind currently in operation.
At the handover event, Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML, emphasized the achievement as a key step in reducing dependence on foreign equipment. He noted that the development of the machine was completed in under two years and highlighted the importance of such advancements for the mining sector.
P.M. Prasad, CMD of CIL, acknowledged the shovel’s role in moving toward more environmentally conscious mining practices. He praised BEML for its role in developing homegrown solutions for large-scale industrial needs.
The BRS21 Rope Shovel offers a fully electric system, making it a zero-emission solution that significantly reduces environmental impact. By eliminating direct exhaust emissions, the shovel is a step forward in sustainable mining practices. Additionally, it provides substantial carbon savings, with an estimated reduction of 189 tonnes of CO₂ per machine annually, contributing to greener mining operations.
Durability is another key feature of the BRS21, built to withstand the harsh conditions of large-scale mining environments. Its robust construction, combined with continuous monitoring and predictive maintenance systems, ensures long-lasting performance and reduced downtime, even in the most demanding conditions. The shovel is designed to operate efficiently and reliably, offering enhanced performance throughout its lifespan.
The BRS21 is also equipped with advanced technological controls that improve both safety and productivity. Features like 360-degree cameras, fatigue monitoring tools, and centralized lubrication systems help optimize operation. The operator’s cabin is designed for comfort, featuring a dust-free environment, ergonomic seating, and bright LED lighting, making it well-suited for long shifts, including night operations.
The BRS21 combines mechanical, electrical, and digital systems to deliver performance suited for demanding mining operations. Its introduction is expected to reduce India’s reliance on imported heavy machinery.
