Battery-Swapping Policy to accelerate EV Penetration: Chetan Maini

In an attempt to bring electric vehicles to the mainstream, and further push India’s carbon net-zero commitment, the Government of India proposed Battery-Swapping Policy. Responding to the development Chetan Maini of Sun Mobility said that battery swapping technology addresses key challenges around upfront cost, upfront cost and long charging time enabling faster adoption of electric vehicles.

The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech announced that the government will introduce a battery swap policy for the electric vehicle industry. Industry stakeholders predict this move will push EV to be a mainstream solution, especially in public transport and goods delivery segments. The policy will address a predominant challenge like charging distance anxiety.

Congratulating the government for taking the lead in accelerating the transition of greener mobility paradigm Chetan Maini, Chairman and Co-founder of Sun Mobility said that the announcement of the battery swapping policy is a way forward to accelerate the penetration of electric vehicles in the country. He also informed that Sun Mobility's battery swapping powered electric vehicles have travelled for more than 13,000,000 km on Indian roads and the new policy announced by the finance minister is further going to accelerate Sun Mobility’s mission to onboard 1 million vehicles. Sun Mobility is one of the first companies to enter the battery swapping technology in India.

More importantly, the new policy will be a good leverage to develop countrywide EV infrastructure, improving the use-case for the public transport fleet. The central government has an ambitious target of the carbon-emission reduction plan in this decade and mainstreaming electric vehicles will help achieve that target.
