Balrampur Chini Mills, a prominent sugar producer in India, is set to launch its ₹2,000 crore bioplastic manufacturing facility by 2026, anticipating a revenue potential of approximately ₹1,800 crore. “The bioplastic project is slated for completion in 2026, with an estimated revenue potential of ₹1,700-1,800 crore. This could lead to over 50% of our product mix being green products by FY27-28,” stated Executive Director Avantika Saraogi.
This initiative aims to position the Kolkata-based company as a significant player in the growing global bioplastics market, which is increasingly embraced as industries seek sustainable alternatives. Given India’s heavy reliance on plastics, particularly single-use varieties, the timing of this project is crucial.
Saraogi highlighted the opportunity for bioplastics to significantly reduce the country’s single-use plastic consumption. India imports over four million tonnes of plastic annually, and with government efforts to ban 19 single-use plastic items, the demand for eco-friendly options is on the rise.
Balrampur Chini Mills plans to start with an initial bioplastic capacity of 75,000 tonnes, with Saraogi noting substantial growth potential, particularly given the country’s rich biomass resources. Currently, bioplastics make up only 1% of the global plastic market, but as industries and governments strive to lower carbon emissions and reach net-zero goals, there is significant potential for expansion in this sector.
Saraogi added that even a small increase to 5% of the total market would represent a significant step toward sustainability. Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. (BCML) is one of India’s largest sugar manufacturers and a key player in the sugar, ethanol, and power industries.
Established in 1975, the company operates a number of sugar mills across Uttar Pradesh, India, and produces a wide range of sugar-related products, including white sugar, refined sugar, and ethanol. BCML also generates power through its co-generation plants, which utilize bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane processing, to produce renewable energy.
With a strong focus on sustainable practices, BCML has been actively involved in bio-fuel production and has played a vital role in promoting ethanol as an alternative fuel. The company continues to expand its production capacities and improve operational efficiency, driven by its commitment to both business growth and environmental responsibility.
