Bajaj Auto is set to make its foray into the domestic e-rickshaw segment by the end of this fiscal year, targeting a rapidly growing but highly fragmented market. The company anticipates receiving regulatory approvals in the ongoing quarter, paving the way for its entry into the segment, which sees monthly sales of around 45,000 units, according to Executive Director Rakesh Sharma. He stated that Bajaj Auto’s upcoming e-rickshaw, branded as a “modern e-rick,” will set new industry standards and significantly enhance owner and passenger satisfaction.

Sharma highlighted the market potential, noting that nearly 50% of three-wheeled mobility in India comes from the e-rickshaw space, particularly in the northern and eastern regions. With many existing offerings being import-dependent and of substandard quality, Bajaj Auto aims to introduce a well-engineered product to organize the segment and generate fresh business opportunities.

The official launch is expected by the end of this fiscal year, though retail sales might extend into early April, depending on final approvals. The company expects the new e-rickshaw to scale up significantly in the first quarter of the next fiscal year.

In addition to its e-rickshaw plans, Bajaj Auto is focusing on expanding its electric two-wheeler footprint. The recently introduced ‘35 Series’ platform for the Chetak electric scooter offers higher range, advanced displays, faster charging, and superior storage space. Sharma expressed confidence that these improvements will strengthen Bajaj Auto’s position in the premium EV segment, where its presence has been relatively limited. With over 250 exclusive Chetak stores and a growing distribution network across 3,000 sales points, Bajaj Auto expects to gain market share and drive profitability, with a major turnaround anticipated in Q4 as the 35-Series scales up from February.
