Ather Energy Becomes a Unicorn After $71M from NIIF

Electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy reported a net loss of ₹812.3 crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2025, despite a 28.6% rise in operational revenue, which reached ₹2,255 crore. The Bengaluru-based company had recorded ₹1,753.8 crore in revenue during FY24.

The revenue increase was offset by a significant escalation in total expenses, which grew to ₹3,117.5 crore in FY25 from ₹2,674.2 crore in the previous year. Major cost drivers included raw material consumption, employee benefit expenses, finance charges, and depreciation.

Including other income, the company’s total income stood at ₹2,305.2 crore. However, this remained insufficient to cover its rising expenditure. Ather’s total comprehensive loss for the year amounted to ₹816.9 crore, compared to ₹1,062.3 crore in FY24. It is important to note that the previous year’s loss included an exceptional item worth ₹174.6 crore, placing both years’ operational losses on a similar scale when adjusted.

Ather’s total assets grew to ₹2,100.6 crore by the end of FY25, up from ₹1,913.5 crore in FY24, reflecting increased investment in property, equipment, and inventories. The company’s equity capital stood at ₹293 crore, while total equity declined slightly to ₹493 crore, underscoring ongoing pressure on profitability despite operational expansion. These results underline the high capital requirements and financial challenges in India’s electric vehicle sector, even as demand for electric mobility gains momentum.

Founded in 2013 by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, Ather Energy is a leading Indian electric vehicle manufacturer specializing in high-performance electric scooters. Headquartered in Bangalore, the company has positioned itself at the forefront of India’s two-wheeler EV segment with technologically advanced products such as the Ather 450X and Ather 450 Plus.

Ather scooters are equipped with smart features including touchscreen dashboards, smartphone connectivity, over-the-air updates, and enhanced safety systems. The company supports its product ecosystem through the Ather Grid, a proprietary network of fast-charging stations aimed at mitigating range anxiety and increasing user convenience.

Ather has adopted a direct-to-consumer sales model, operating its own experience centers under the Ather Space brand. This approach enables closer engagement with customers and greater control over sales and service quality. The company continues to scale production and expand its footprint across Indian cities while investing in new product development and charging infrastructure. With a focus on building a comprehensive electric mobility ecosystem, Ather Energy collaborates with domestic suppliers and invests in long-term solutions to support India’s transition to clean transportation.
