Assam Petrochemicals Limited has partnered with Gurgaon-based FC TecNrgy, a leader in fuel cells and alternative energy solutions, to produce high-purity methanol specifically for India’s growing fuel cell market.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Col Karandeep Singh (Retd), Managing Director and CEO of FC TecNrgy Pvt Ltd, and Rajnesh Gogoi, Managing Director of Assam Petrochemicals Limited, during the International Methanol Seminar hosted by Niti Aayog. The event was presided over by Niti Aayog’s vice chairman, Suman Bery.

According to the agreement, Assam Petrochemicals will refine its methanol to reach a purity level of 99.95%, making it suitable for fuel cell applications. This collaboration is expected to help reduce fossil fuel consumption in India and contribute to cleaner energy solutions.

The companies plan to jointly produce 50-75 lakh litres of high-purity methanol over the next five years, with ambitions to market this product both domestically and internationally. Their collaboration is aligned with India’s carbon reduction commitments under COP26 and the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Methanol, produced by combining carbon monoxide and hydrogen with a catalyst or using syngas derived from biomass, is increasingly being used as an alternative fuel in vehicles, ships, and power generation.
