Ashok Leyland is moving cautiously towards battery technology localization as part of its electrification plans. The company’s Managing Director and CEO, Shenu Agarwal, outlined the strategy, stating that the initial focus is on building in-house expertise in designing battery modules and packs using battery cells, an area where India currently lacks significant expertise.
Speaking at an industry event, Agarwal stressed the importance of developing internal capabilities before considering any large-scale investments in battery manufacturing. “Before thinking about investing in localizing battery or battery packs, the first step is to build the necessary in-house expertise,” he said. He added that India has few experts in designing modules or packs from battery cells, and this gap must be addressed before further steps can be taken.
Ashok Leyland has already started developing its internal design capabilities, according to Agarwal. Once the company reaches a sufficient level of proficiency in designing battery packs, it will explore the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility. “We are open to investment, but we are committed to following a well-defined roadmap,” he said, highlighting the company’s cautious approach to avoid over-dependence on foreign technology.
Agarwal’s comments reflect a larger trend in India’s automotive industry, where the development of critical technologies is seen as essential for long-term success. For Ashok Leyland, building a solid foundation in battery technology is key to staying competitive in the rapidly growing electric vehicle sector.
