Ashok Leyland, the leading Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer and part of the Hinduja Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Nidec Motor Corporation, a global leader in electric motor drives and a wholly owned subsidiary of Nidec Corporation, Japan. This collaboration aims to develop advanced e-drive motors and systems tailored to the specific demands of India’s commercial vehicle sector, promoting efficient and sustainable electric mobility solutions.

The agreement, signed by Ashok Leyland’s MD & CEO Shenu Agarwal and Nidec’s President of Motion and Energy, Michael Briggs, will see the two companies work closely to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Electric Drive Units (EDUs).

The CoE will focus on innovative motor technologies, power electronics, and gear-shifting systems for electric vehicles. Both companies will also engage in joint R&D efforts, with contributions to infrastructure, skilling, and the creation of differentiated motor technologies for Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle portfolio and its subsidiary, Switch Mobility.

Ashok Leyland will continue sourcing motors from Nidec for its existing electric vehicle range while collaborating on future EV innovations. The partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to creating e-drive solutions that cater to India’s diverse terrains and commercial vehicle needs. It also aims to strengthen the local supply chain for next-generation electric vehicles in India.

Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland, commented, “We are excited to partner with Nidec to co-develop e-drive motors designed specifically for India’s commercial vehicle market. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in enhancing our electric mobility capabilities and setting new standards in sustainable commercial transportation.”

Michael Briggs, President of Nidec Motion and Energy, added, “Nidec’s expertise in motor technology, combined with Ashok Leyland’s deep understanding of the commercial vehicle market, makes this partnership ideal for accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in India. Together, we aim to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of the industry in a sustainable way.”

This collaboration reaffirms Ashok Leyland’s commitment to leading the future of electric mobility in India and sets the stage for innovative solutions that address the challenges of sustainable commercial transportation.
