Ascend Performance Materials has officially begun producing high-purity acrylonitrile at its Chocolate Bayou facility in Alvin, Texas, following the successful installation and commissioning of new purification equipment. Alex Mihut, Vice President of Performance Chemicals at Ascend, commented, “We are thrilled to offer high-purity acrylonitrile to new markets, supporting innovations in sustainability and technology. This development not only expands our product range but also underscores our dedication to providing critical materials that meet the evolving demands of our customers and the industry.”
Acrylonitrile is an essential component in the production of various polymers and synthetic rubbers. The high-purity version of acrylonitrile is especially valuable in sectors such as aerospace, renewable energy, and healthcare. The equipment used in this production was partially funded through a contract with the U.S. government, which ensures a steady supply of crucial raw materials for the domestic production of nitrile rubber gloves.
Scott Van Wagener, Senior Site Director of the Chocolate Bayou plant, reflected on the achievement, saying, “This is a major milestone in the 63-year history of our facility. We remain committed to investing in technologies that not only enhance our operations but also contribute to our customers’ growth.” In addition to high-purity acrylonitrile, Ascend plans to further expand capabilities at the Chocolate Bayou site, including the production of acetonitrile, a key material in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
