ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has announced its readiness for the upcoming Green Steel Taxonomy, set to be implemented by the Ministry of Steel in the 2026-27 financial year. The company’s current manufacturing processes and sustainability efforts position it to significantly contribute to the production of ‘green steel’ under the new framework.
Introduced in December 2024, the Green Steel Taxonomy outlines a system to classify low-carbon steel based on its carbon emissions intensity. Steel that emits less than 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) per tonne of finished steel will be eligible for green certification, with ratings ranging from three-star to five-star. Steel exceeding this emissions threshold will not qualify for the green designation.
AM/NS India is aiming to be the first integrated steel producer in India to achieve a three-star rating. For the fiscal year 2023, the company reported a CO₂ intensity of 2.17 tCO₂ per tonne of crude steel, 14 percent lower than the national average. The company aims to reduce its carbon emissions intensity to 1.8 tCO₂/tcs by 2030, representing a 20 percent reduction based on 2021 levels. Since 2015, AM/NS India has already reduced its carbon intensity by 35 percent.
Currently, 65 percent of AM/NS India’s steel production comes from the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) process, which uses natural gas and has a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional methods. The company’s expansion plans are focused on adopting cutting-edge technologies to further decrease emissions.
During the taxonomy’s launch, Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik emphasized that the framework’s adoption is mandatory, with a target to reduce emission intensity to 2.2 tCO₂ per tonne by 2030, enhancing global competitiveness.
To further its sustainable steel production goals, AM/NS India is implementing several initiatives. One of these is a renewable hybrid energy project by AM Green Energy in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, which will provide electricity to the company’s Hazira plant in Gujarat through a co-located pumped hydro storage facility, offering both environmental and operational advantages.
The company has also launched a scrap processing unit in Khopoli, Maharashtra, with plans to establish three more centers. These facilities will increase the use of recycled materials in steel production, thus helping reduce emissions. Additionally, AM/NS India is integrating digital technologies and machine learning to boost operational efficiency and reduce resource consumption.
AM/NS India manufactures a range of green and specialized steel products designed to meet global standards and support a sustainable value chain. The company is recognized as one of the lowest carbon-intensive steel producers in India.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, operating as an integrated flat carbon steel producer with an annual crude steel capacity of 9 million tonnes and a pellet production capacity of 20 million tonnes. The company produces a diverse range of flat steel products, including value-added steel, backed by advanced downstream facilities.
