ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a collaboration between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, renowned global steel producers, has announced the selection of Dr Arvind Bodhankar as its Chief Sustainability Officer.
AM/NS India, a partnership between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, stands as a prominent player in India’s flat carbon steel sector. Boasting a crude steel capacity of 9 million tonnes annually, the company also features cutting-edge downstream operations. Its product line encompasses a wide array of flat steel offerings, including value-added variants, and boasts a pellet capacity of 20 million tonnes.
As Chief Sustainability Officer, Dr Arvind Bodhankar will spearhead ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel’s (AM/NS India) sustainability initiatives, concentrating on devising and executing strategies for decarbonization, environmental conservation, and bolstering the organization’s climate-related efforts.
Dr Arvind Bodhankar, formerly the Executive Director of ESG & Chief Risk Officer at Dalmia Bharat Group, spearheaded sustainability and risk management efforts. His responsibilities included overseeing projects related to renewable energy, circular economy, carbon capture, and green building initiatives.
With a wealth of experience exceeding three decades in various manufacturing sectors and carbon-intensive industries such as petrochemicals, fertilizers, steel, cement, and automotive, Dr Bodhankar has held leadership positions in operations, quality systems, health, safety, and environment. He has also championed sustainability strategies for prominent manufacturing firms.
Wim Van Gerven, the Chief Operating Officer of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), expressed that Dr Bodhankar’s wealth of experience and expertise in sustainability and risk management will be invaluable in advancing the company’s sustainability goals. Dr Bodhankar will play a crucial role in steering the sustainability agenda forward as AM/NS India implements growth strategies to meet the evolving needs of the country.
AM/NS India aims to reduce emissions intensity by 20% by 2030, with a comprehensive roadmap of actions throughout the steel production value chain. This includes plans to increase the use of renewable energy to fulfill 100% of grid electricity needs, double the recycling of scrap steel through new sourcing and processing facilities, and enhance operational efficiencies through the adoption of new technologies.
