Aptiv Invests $45M in Chennai to Boost SDV Cockpit Production

Aptiv has allocated over USD 45 million (around Rs 375 crore) for engineering and facility upgrades to expand its intelligent manufacturing plant in Chennai. This expansion aims to provide automotive manufacturers with advanced software-defined cockpit solutions. Aptiv plans to double its workforce at the Chennai facility to support this project.

The increased plant size, now nearly 220,000 square feet, will enable the production of cutting-edge cockpit control systems and incorporate advanced safety and user experience features, including radars, cameras, and next-generation electronic control units (ECUs). This expansion will serve both the Indian market and global markets, addressing the growing demand for sophisticated safety systems in modern vehicles.

Matthew Cole, Senior Vice President and President of Advanced Safety and User Experience (AS&UX) at Aptiv, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “We are excited to advance our business in India and develop the next generation of fully-integrated, software-defined cockpit controllers. As specialists in advanced safety and mission-critical systems, we are committed to anticipating our customers’ needs and delivering innovative solutions that enhance vehicle performance, reduce complexity, and lower costs while adapting to evolving requirements.”

Cole further noted, “Our investment in India spans nearly 30 years, and this expansion in Chennai marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to the region. We are already supplying high-quality components like integrated body control modules (iBCM) to major automakers in India. This new and advanced production facility will enable us to support a broader client base, reinforcing our role as a key automotive partner in India. The latest high-performance cockpit technology demonstrates our ability to design, develop, and produce pioneering solutions made in India for India.”

In India, Aptiv provides a comprehensive range of connected solutions that support the transition to software-defined vehicles. Their product portfolio includes driver monitoring systems, infotainment systems, and vehicle electrification technologies, such as high-voltage wiring harnesses, cables, connectors, and charging systems.

In February 2023, Aptiv launched a new technical center in Bengaluru to leverage software expertise for developing advanced solutions in connectivity, safety, and digital cockpits. With over 13,000 employees in India, Aptiv operates three technical centers and maintains a strategically located manufacturing network with seven plants. Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki are among Aptiv’s major customers in the Indian passenger vehicle sector.
