Applied Materials to Set Up AI-Driven Chip Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Chennai

Applied Materials India is partnering with the Tamil Nadu Government to establish a state-of-the-art Center of Excellence (CoE) in Chennai, focused on AI-driven semiconductor manufacturing and equipment. The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in San Francisco, attended by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Dr. Prabu Raja, President of the Semiconductor Products Group at Applied Materials.

This initiative aims to boost the semiconductor sector by creating over 500 technical jobs in Tamil Nadu in the coming years. Additionally, it will enhance collaboration between Applied Materials and local academic institutions, driving research in AI, machine learning, and data science specifically tailored to the semiconductor equipment industry.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted the significance of this investment, stating, “Investment in key sectors like advanced electronics and semiconductors will help us achieve the USD 1 trillion economy goal by 2030. We aim to make Tamil Nadu the most advanced knowledge and innovation hub in South Asia.”

Dr. Prabu Raja expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting, “Tamil Nadu is one of India’s most industrialized states with a robust manufacturing sector and a strong talent pool. Applied Materials looks forward to expanding our presence in Chennai and collaborating with the government to integrate AI and advanced analytics into the local semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.”
