Apple Inc. is expanding its manufacturing footprint by starting production of its high-end iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in India, following the successful introduction of India-made iPhone 15 models last year. This marks the first time that these premium devices will be assembled outside of China, as Apple seeks to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The production shift to India is expected to lower Apple’s manufacturing costs by up to 10%, although retail prices for the devices may remain unchanged due to local taxes and component costs, according to a report published in a newspaper.

Foxconn, one of Apple’s key manufacturing partners, will spearhead the production at its facility in Tamil Nadu, with preparations already underway. Thousands of workers are being trained to ensure that the production meets Apple’s stringent quality standards. Other Apple partners in India, including Pegatron and the Tata Group, are also set to participate in the assembly process.

The local assembly of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max is anticipated to reduce the production costs in India, where high import duties have previously made these models more expensive than in other markets. However, due to the high cost of components and taxes, Indian consumers may not see a significant price reduction.

Despite the local production, the majority of the India-made iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max units will be exported to markets in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, reflecting the relatively lower domestic demand for these premium devices. The expansion of manufacturing in India is projected to increase the country’s share of global iPhone production from 14% to 25% by next year.

As the iPhone 16 series launch approaches, rumors suggest that the new models will feature several design enhancements, including a glossy titanium finish, larger displays, and slimmer bezels. Powered by the latest A18 Bionic and A18 Pro processors, the iPhone 16 series is expected to deliver faster performance and better energy efficiency, along with advanced AI features in iOS 18. The official unveiling of the iPhone 16 series is anticipated on September 10, with an event at the Steve Jobs Theatre in Apple Park.
