Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam will house the state’s first integrated Electronic Waste Management facility, setting a national precedent in sustainable e-waste handling. The project, launched by Dr P Krishnaiah, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), represents a critical step in addressing the growing environmental challenges associated with electronic waste.
The facility introduces a comprehensive, environmentally compliant system for electronic waste extraction and processing, marking the first such initiative within a medical technology park in India. Designed in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the plant will deploy advanced mechanical and chemical technologies to recover high-purity metals from discarded electronic components.
Dr Krishnaiah highlighted the broader impact of the initiative, stating that it will transform e-waste into a valuable resource stream, in line with national sustainability objectives. The plant follows a “Zero Waste” operational model, ensuring minimal environmental footprint while maximizing material recovery.
The system connects producers, consumers, and licensed processors through a unified digital platform, ensuring traceability and regulatory compliance across the e-waste lifecycle. Doorstep pickup services and real-time valuation offer additional incentives for public participation, with consumers able to exchange obsolete electronics for immediate monetary compensation. Beyond its environmental benefits, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and further strengthen AMTZ’s reputation as a leader in sustainable industrial development and circular economy practices.
