Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, announced on Thursday that it has joined the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID), a global initiative aimed at accelerating the transition to Net Zero in line with the Paris Agreement. Ambuja Cements is the first cement manufacturer globally to become a member of AFID.

With a production capacity of 78.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), Ambuja Cements is India’s second-largest cement producer and is targeting Net Zero emissions by 2050. Karan Adani, Non-Executive Director of Ambuja Cements, emphasized that joining the alliance marks a crucial milestone in the company’s sustainability efforts.

He highlighted that the company is already among the world’s lowest in emission intensity and continues to implement strategies to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By joining AFID, the company aims to benefit from the shared expertise of global industry leaders while contributing its own decarbonization initiatives.

In support of its green energy goals, the company has committed ₹10,000 crore towards renewable energy projects, aiming for 1 GW of capacity and 376 MW from Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS) to ensure 60% of its power needs come from renewable sources by FY2028.

In fiscal year 2024, Ambuja Cements utilized over 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources and became 11 times water-positive and 8 times plastic-negative, further advancing its environmental goals. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) leads and coordinates AFID’s activities.
