AM Green Ammonia B.V. has reached the Final Investment Decision (FID) for its first major green ammonia project, which will be located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. This project marks the beginning of the company’s goal to achieve a production capacity of 5 million tons of green ammonia annually by 2030, equivalent to 1 million tons of green hydrogen. The company is backed by Gentari, GIC, and its founders.

The project will involve transforming an existing urea plant in Kakinada, acquired earlier this year, into a green ammonia production facility. The plant is expected to start operations in the second half of 2026. The Kakinada facility has already received pre-certification from CertifHy, ensuring compliance with the European Union’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) requirements for green ammonia.

Much of the green ammonia produced at this facility will be exported to European markets, with term sheets already signed with companies like Uniper, Yara, and Keppel for its use in various green hydrogen applications.

The project will be powered by 1,300 MW of round-the-clock carbon-free energy, enabled by 4,500 MW of solar and wind hybrid capacity and 950 MW of pumped storage. A 25-year fixed-price power purchase agreement (PPA) with NTPC is already in place, covering half of the required capacity, with the remaining expected to be supplied by Gentari.

AM Green has also secured access to gigawatt-scale pumped storage projects and has a manufacturing partnership with John Cockerill for 2GW of state-of-the-art pressurized alkaline electrolyzers, which will be used in this project. These technologies will address renewable intermittency issues and allow for up to 90% utilization of the electrolyzers, positioning the project as one of the most innovative and cost-effective green ammonia initiatives globally.

In addition to the Kakinada project, AM Green is planning to develop green ammonia production facilities across multiple locations in India, aiming to reach its 5 MTPA target by 2030. This would contribute significantly to India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, accounting for about one-fifth of the country’s green hydrogen target and 10% of Europe’s green hydrogen import target by 2030.

Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, stated, “The FID milestone for our Kakinada plant highlights our commitment to delivering carbon-free energy solutions globally, in line with EU RFNBO standards. This achievement strengthens AM Green’s position as a leader in the energy transition, helping to decarbonize key industries such as refineries, shipping, fertilizers, power generation, and chemicals through affordable green molecules.”

Founded by Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli, the creators of Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, AM Green is a leading provider of energy transition solutions in India. The company aims to become one of the world’s most cost-competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules. AM Green is also involved in developing production capabilities for green molecules and establishing an international renewables and storage business, as well as a joint venture for electrolyzer manufacturing with Belgium’s John Cockerill.
