Altair (Nasdaq: ALTR), a global leader in computational intelligence, has announced its participation in the £5.8 million Performance Integrated Vehicle Optimization Technology (PIVOT) project. Supported by Innovate UK and the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), the initiative aims to transform vehicle manufacturing by developing lighter and more sustainable components, utilizing Altair’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation technologies.

Led by Sarginsons Industries, the PIVOT project includes key partners such as Altair, Aston Martin, Brunel University London, and metal recycling specialist GESCRAP. The project will focus on creating innovative software that integrates casting simulation, topology optimization, and AI to design vehicle components that are optimized for weight, structural performance, and manufacturability. These advancements are expected to result in cast aluminum parts that are up to 30% lighter while maintaining the required performance standards.

Sam Mahalingam, Chief Technical Officer at Altair, stated, “This partnership highlights how our AI-powered engineering solutions help manufacturers create more efficient vehicle components, significantly reducing weight and environmental impact. We’re excited to collaborate with these forward-thinking organizations to pave the way for a more sustainable future in the automotive industry.”

The project is partially funded by a £2.9 million grant from Innovate UK and APC. A key focus of PIVOT is the use of 100% recycled aluminum, which could reduce carbon emissions embedded in vehicle components by up to 95%. By applying advanced grain refinement techniques developed by Brunel University London, the project aims to overcome the mechanical limitations of recycled aluminum, enabling its use in structural vehicle applications like chassis systems.

Mark Nunan, Managing Director of Sarginsons Industries, said, “PIVOT is a major leap forward for the casting industry. With Altair’s cutting-edge technology, we’re creating components that are lighter, stronger, and much more environmentally friendly.”

PIVOT will serve as a model for how AI, recycled materials, and advanced casting technologies can revolutionize vehicle production while minimizing environmental impact, offering significant advancements for both OEMs and foundries in the coming years.
