Alstom has secured a contract from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars (39 trainsets of six cars each), a Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, and five years of maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The agreement, valued at several hundred million euros, follows L&T’s award of the Integrated Systems Package for the Green Line by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The package covers rolling stock, signalling, telecommunications, platform screen doors, depot equipment, and maintenance.

The 35.3-km elevated corridor stretches from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, featuring 32 stations. It will be among the city’s longest metro lines, linking with the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other metro corridors. Alstom has already supplied trains and signalling for Mumbai’s Aqua Line and continues to play a significant role in the city’s expanding metro network.

Ling Fang, President, APAC Region, Alstom, said, “This new project builds on our long-standing partnership with Mumbai. Our trains and signalling systems are already operational on other lines, and we are proud to contribute further to the city’s growing infrastructure.”

All 39 trainsets will be designed in Bangalore, produced at Alstom’s Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh, with propulsion systems built in Coimbatore and bogies manufactured in Savli, Gujarat. The Sri City plant has a production capacity of 480 cars annually and has delivered metros for Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Montreal, and Sydney.

The new driverless trains will feature modern passenger-centric designs with air circulation systems, wheelchair access, and bicycle racks. Safety and reliability will be supported by advanced braking, cybersecurity protections, and high-performance components.

Alstom’s Urbalis CBTC signalling technology will enable driverless operation with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4). The system will be managed from an Operations Control Centre at Mandale depot and a Backup Control Centre at Mogharpada. Automatic train control will manage the headway and safety of 39 six-car trains.

The company will also provide FlexCare Perform maintenance services for five years, ensuring smooth and reliable daily operations of the 234 metro cars. The solution is expected to ease congestion, cut travel times, reduce emissions, and strengthen Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure.

With more than three decades of CBTC expertise and 190 metro lines equipped across 32 countries, Alstom continues to lead the market in both rolling stock and advanced signalling. Its Metropolis metro systems serve over 80 customers worldwide, reinforcing its position as a key partner in sustainable urban mobility.
