Alstom has confirmed its latest collaboration with Kawasaki Rail Car Inc, agreeing to supply propulsion components for an additional 435 R211 series subway cars for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) New York City Transit. This order marks the second option exercised under their ongoing contract, supporting NYCT’s broader initiative to modernize its subway fleet and improve service reliability for millions of daily riders.

“With this new phase, over 80% of the NYCT fleet will be powered by Alstom propulsion systems,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas. “This milestone further strengthens our role in delivering reliable, high-performance solutions that keep New York City moving.” The R211 cars represent the next generation of urban rail vehicles, and the propulsion systems supplied will play a central role in boosting their energy efficiency and operational dependability.

Production of these propulsion components will take place at Alstom’s Hornell, New York site—recognized as the largest passenger rail manufacturing facility in the U.S. The site houses advanced manufacturing and testing infrastructure, including facilities for building AC traction motors, high-speed circuit breakers, and complete test labs. This allows for in-house validation of every component, ensuring high quality and adherence to safety and performance standards.

Alstom’s extensive lineup of railway components—ranging from traction converters and motors to train control systems and interior equipment—positions it as a key supplier to rail operators and manufacturers worldwide. By supplying cutting-edge technology developed and produced in the US, the company continues to support both the domestic transit industry and the broader goals of sustainable and reliable urban transportation.
