Alstom, a global leader in sustainable transportation solutions, will supply SNCF Voyageurs with 96 additional RER NG trainsets to expand and renew the fleet on the RER D line. This new contract follows the recent approval of the financing agreement by the Île-de-France Mobilités Board of Directors on April 10, 2025. Fully funded by Île-de-France Mobilités and valued at around €1.7 billion, the order is part of a framework deal signed in 2017 between SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom. With this order, the total number of RER NG trainsets reaches 262 — including 130 for the RER E line and 132 for the RER D line.

Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France, welcomed the announcement, stating, “This order reflects the continued trust of Île-de-France Mobilités and SNCF Voyageurs in our innovative rolling stock, designed and assembled at our Valenciennes and Crespin sites in Northern France.”

The New Generation RER (RER NG) is a double-decker train designed to serve the RER D and RER E lines operated by Transilien SNCF Voyageurs for Île-de-France Mobilités. These trains aim to boost passenger comfort and improve schedule reliability.

The trains feature a spacious design that enhances capacity and passenger movement. Their “boa” layout, which connects single and double-deck cars with wide doors, ensures smooth boarding and disembarking. Single-deck end cars provide level platforms for quick, direct access for wheelchair users, ensuring an accessible and comfortable experience.

RER NG trains offer modern amenities including air conditioning, adaptive LED lighting for different times of day, USB charging ports, and multiple screens displaying real-time transport information. Seating has been carefully designed to maximize comfort throughout the journey.

Built on Alstom’s proven urban and suburban technology, the RER NG trains deliver high levels of safety, availability, and reliability. Their advanced traction systems allow for faster acceleration and braking, benefiting the high-traffic commuter lines where they operate. The RER NG trains began service on the RER E line in November 2023 and on the RER D line in December 2024.

A total of 262 RER NG trainsets have been ordered to serve the RER D and RER E lines, with the most recent order including 96 trainsets specifically for the RER D line. These modern trains are designed to improve capacity and comfort for daily commuters. Each RER D trainset is composed of seven cars, stretching 130 meters in length, and can travel at speeds up to 140 km/h. With seating for 606 passengers and room for a total of 1,861 people, the trains are built to handle high passenger volumes efficiently.

The trainsets are outfitted with advanced features to enhance the passenger experience, including over 320 kilometers of wiring, more than 310 USB charging ports, 54 screens displaying travel information, and 54 surveillance cameras to ensure safety and security throughout the journey. Design and assembly are handled by Alstom’s Valenciennes-Petite Forêt and Crespin plants in Hauts-de-France, supported by several other French manufacturing sites and the Saint-Ouen design center.
