Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, is ramping up its production capabilities in Poland with a significant investment of PLN 487 million (approximately €115 million) to enhance its rolling stock manufacturing sites. The investment will span from 2022 to 2027, focusing on the company’s facilities in Chorzów, Wrocław, and Nadarzyn. Over the past three years, PLN 320 million has already been committed to upgrading infrastructure and modernizing these sites, including the installation of a new aluminum welding line at the Wrocław facility, enabling the expansion of production to include aluminum products alongside the previously carbon steel-based products.
With the new production capabilities in Poland, Alstom plans to fulfill a robust order portfolio from international clients. This includes manufacturing Coradia Stream trains for Denmark, Romania, and Bulgaria, as well as Coradia Max double-decker trains for Germany’s Bremen–Lower Saxony (LNGV), Baden-Württemberg, and Main-Weser networks. Altogether, these orders will amount to more than 200 units.
“We are working hard to meet the growing demand for high-quality rolling stock in both European and global markets. The Polish teams have been instrumental in both the design and production of new trains, components, and solutions that enhance mobility while ensuring safety, comfort, and sustainability,” said Beata Rusinowicz, Managing Director of Alstom in Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic States.
Looking ahead, an additional PLN 170 million will be invested in the development of Alstom’s largest Polish production site in Chorzów over the next two years. This expansion will include the construction of three new halls covering nearly 8,000 square meters, as well as the installation of advanced production lines and machinery. The expanded facility will produce both double-decker and single-deck trains for clients across Europe, including Denmark, Romania, and Germany.
In addition, the existing halls at the Chorzów site will be adapted to support the production of over 1,300 units for the Coradia Stream electric multiple units—a project that has been ongoing for over six years and primarily serves the Italian market. The last car from this project is expected to leave the production line in spring 2025, marking a significant milestone for the company.
In 2024, Alstom further boosted its production capacity with the opening of a new 10,000 square meter hall at the Świętochłowice plant, where specialized components, such as train cabs for the Coradia Max and Coradia Stream series, are produced. The facility also focuses on servicing metro car subassemblies and equipping both new and modernized trains.
The plant operates stations that can handle up to six cars simultaneously, working closely with the Chorzów plant, which serves as the company’s competency center for metro and regional trains, as well as components for suburban and urban transport systems. These expansions are a key part of Alstom’s strategy to meet the increasing demand for sustainable and high-quality transportation solutions, supporting its mission to drive the future of mobility across the globe.
