Alstom has achieved a key milestone in the manufacturing of trains for Santiago Metro’s Line 7 with the completion of the first carbody shell at its Taubaté factory in São Paulo, Brazil. This marks a significant step in the production process of 37 trains, each consisting of five cars. The trains are part of a broader contract with Metro de Santiago, which includes the delivery of Urbalis CBTC signaling, a 20-year maintenance agreement, and a cutting-edge predictive maintenance system covering trains, tracks, and catenary systems for the city’s metro network.
Denis Girault, General Manager of Alstom Chile, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “These trains will improve transportation in Chile by providing reliable, safe, and accessible travel while offering an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transport for millions of Santiago’s commuters.”
The new Metropolis trains, crafted from stainless steel, are designed for durability and energy efficiency, with a lifespan of over 40 years. Each 102-meter-long train can carry up to 1,250 passengers. Key features include wide doors for easy access, spacious corridors, and seamless connections between carriages for smooth passenger movement.
The trains will also be equipped with air conditioning, a state-of-the-art passenger information system with USB charging ports, and a robust cybersecurity framework that includes high-resolution cameras and intercoms linking passengers to the metro’s control center. Santiago Metro operates seven lines covering 143 stations across 150 kilometers, serving approximately 2.5 million passengers daily.
The ongoing construction of Line 7 will span 26 kilometers and include 19 stations, connecting neighborhoods such as Renca, Cerro Navia, and Vitacura to the metro network for the first time. The line is expected to significantly reduce travel time, with an estimated 37-minute journey between terminal stations, cutting current bus travel time by over half.
Alstom has been a key player in Chile’s infrastructure development for over 75 years. The company supplies innovative products and services for both Santiago and Valparaíso metro systems and is involved in various railway projects across the country.
