Addressing Bengaluru’s severe water scarcity, Alstom, has partnered with United Way Bengaluru to rejuvenate Bidare Agrahara Lake in Doddabanahalli Village. This effort, part of the larger ‘Wake the Lake’ plan aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, has increased the lake’s water holding capacity to 18 crore litres.
The project has improved the groundwater table and revived the Dakshina Pinakini River by removing 25,800 cubic meters of silt and 8,300 cubic meters of sludge, enhancing water quality and capacity.
Bengaluru, known as ‘the city of lakes’, faces a severe water crisis due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate change, leading to depleting groundwater and polluted lakes. Alstom’s initiative showcases its commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.
Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, highlighted the project’s success in improving water quality and green cover, aiming to transform the lake into a biodiversity hotspot. The project also includes removing hyacinth, strengthening the lake’s main bund, constructing an inlet culvert, restoring the waste weir, creating sedimentation ponds, and fencing the lake. An island for bird perching and native tree plantations were added to promote biodiversity, along with community amenities like walk paths, an open-air gym, and play areas for enhanced community engagement.
Alstom is dedicated to developing sustainable transport systems and has a significant presence in India, contributing to the country’s ‘Rail Revolution’ and supporting modernization initiatives with innovative technologies and a strong local supply chain.
