Allison Transmission has joined forces with Ashok Leyland, a major commercial vehicle manufacturer under the Hinduja Group, to introduce Tamil Nadu’s first low-floor city buses equipped with fully automatic transmissions.

Allison Torqmatic® Series transmissions power the new Ashok Leyland 12-meter, stepless-entry diesel buses, designed with low floors to facilitate accessibility for passengers with disabilities. These buses will replace older models with manual transmissions, helping Allison retain its lead in the Indian market for fully automatic transmissions in low-floor city buses.

The Allison-powered buses will run on routes in key cities across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore. Tailored specifically for urban and suburban transit as well as tour coaches, the Allison Torqmatic Series—featuring the T 280 model—works in combination with Ashok Leyland’s H-series six-cylinder, four-valve 184-kilowatt (246 horsepower) diesel engine, manufactured at Allison’s Tamil Nadu facility near Chennai.

“This is a significant advancement in our commitment to fully automatic transmissions in India,” stated Heidi Schutte, Vice President of EMEA, APAC, and South America Sales at Allison Transmission. “We’re excited to contribute to Tamil Nadu’s transit network and anticipate continued collaboration with Ashok Leyland and Indian transit authorities.”
