The first of Airbus’s new generation SpainSat satellites, SpainSat NG-I, was successfully launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, U.S. Operated by Hisdesat for the Spanish Armed Forces, SpainSat NG-I will provide Europe’s most advanced secure communications capabilities in UHF, Ka, and X bands, entering service in geostationary orbit in the second half of 2025 after initial testing.
“This launch marks a major milestone in enhancing Spanish and European sovereignty with cutting-edge secure communications technology enabled by our Eurostar Neo platform,” said Alain Fauré, Head of Space Systems at Airbus Defence and Space. The innovative satellite features a unique payload developed through collaboration with the Spanish space industry, led by Airbus.
Airbus Defence and Space designed, integrated, and tested the satellite at its Toulouse facilities, with Airbus Spain also creating the advanced X-band active antenna system. This system replaces 16 traditional antennas, offering exceptional flexibility, resilience, and the ability to adapt coverage up to 1,000 times per second. The satellite is also radiation-hardened for protection against potential nuclear blasts.
SpainSat NG satellites will deliver a tenfold increase in communication capacity compared to the previous generation, enabling faster data transmission with coverage across two-thirds of the Earth’s surface. The second satellite, SpainSat NG-II, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
